protein hazelnut cinnamon coffee

Lately, my favorite drink in the late morning is this creamy chocolate and caramel protein coffee.

Which is wild coming from me because anyone who knows me, knows I am NOT a coffee drinker. I like the taste of coffee as much as I like looking at slugs (not very much at all). However, I do enjoy a sugar coffee drink with extra whipped cream and sugar and fat from coffee shops every now and then. My favorite is the caramel macchiato.

It’s my favorite for two reasons: 1) it’s sugar with a splash of coffee. Perfect! and 2) my old boyfriend called me caramel macchiato part of his pickup line and despite it being a ridiculous pick up line, it worked and I now have two children with him.

The caramel macchiato has a special place in my heart. And in my stomach. However, Starbucks prices do not have a special place in my heart. Or in my wallet.

A good friend of mine posted that she was loving mixing her morning coffee with the caramel Premier Protein. She said it tastes like Starbucks. I keep caramel, chocolate and banana Premier Protein flavors in stock at home so I made a point to try her concoction.

And it did not disappoint. I tweaked it a little to fit my taste buds and the resulting combination is spectacular.

I start with hazelnut flavored coffee. Aldi sells one we enjoy for a great price. I love the way it smells and I enjoy the mild coffee taste (remember, I’m not usually a coffee drinker).

I also use both the chocolate AND caramel Premier Protein flavor because I’m a daredevil. And I sprinkle cinnamon in because hashtag health gains (please read my sarcasm y’all- I just really dig cinnamon). Like I said, this combination is a winner and I actually am starting to enjoy coffee because of it. However, it’s also good with regular coffee (my husbands preference) and just one or the other protein flavor. I just happen to like them combined. It’s also good without the cinnamon but once again cinnamon is too good to not start your morning with it.

Not only does this coffee mixture taste great, it’s pretty legit in the macro department: 64kcal, 2g carbs, 1.2g fat, and a 12g protein. For a cup of flavored coffee, these are awesome macros! Especially when you consider the fact that my favorite drink at Starbucks has 250kcal, 33g carbs, 7g fat, 10g protein.

On the weekends, I’ll jazz it up a little with some homemade whip cream and a sprinkle of caramel and chocolate syrup. Does it need it? Nah. Is it a Saturday must? Yes.

Ingredients: 

  • 10 ounces Hazlenut coffee
  • 1 ounce caramel Premier Protein
  • 3 ounces chocolate Premier Protein
  • Dash of cinnamon
  • **Optional: whipped cream, chocolate syrup, caramel syrup**

Directions:

Pour 10 ounces of freshly brewed coffee in a glass jar or coffee mug, add in the protein shakes and sprinkle a dash of cinnamon on top. If it’s Saturday, feel free to top with whipped cream, chocolate and caramel syrups!
